The educational institution began its activities on July 1, 1912.

The official opening of the Vinnytsia Teachers' Institute took place on September 14, 1912. The Institute was established without division into departments or faculties. A student who graduated from this educational institution could teach any subject. At first, 20 students were enrolled, and in the following years the number of students grew to more than 100 people.

In 1953, the institute was relocated to a new building at Chervonopraporna Street, 32 (now K. Ostrozkyi Street: the building of the former railway administration).

During the 70s and 80s, the institute's educational facilities were expanded. Laboratory building No. 3 with a total area of almost 16 thousand square meters was constructed and put into service.

Building No. 2 with a total area of over 3,000 square meters was equipped for educational purposes. There are four dormitories with more than 2,000 seats.

In 1999, Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsubynskyi State Pedagogical Universty was ranked among the five best pedagogical higher education institutions of Ukraine, and in 2000 and 2001 - among the top ten humanitarian and pedagogical higher education institutions of Ukraine. In 2002, the Golden Fortune International Academic Ranking of Popularity and Quality awarded Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University with the silver medal "Independence of Ukraine" in the nomination "For a significant contribution to the training of highly qualified personnel for the education of Ukraine".

Since 2015, Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University has been managed by Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Nataliia Lazarenko.

Currently, Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University is a multi-profile institution of higher education. It includes the Educational and Research Institute of Pedagogy, Psychology, and Training of Higher Education, as well as nine faculties: the Faculty of Nature and Geography, the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Sciences and Technologies, the Faculty of History, the Faculty of Law, Public Management, and Administration, the Faculty of Foreign Languages, the Faculty of Arts and Art Educational Technologies, the Mykhailo Stelmakh Faculty of Philology and Journalism, the Valentyna Voloshyna Faculty of Pre-school and Primary Education, and the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports.

The facilities include 3 educational and laboratory buildings, a computer centre, an assembly hall with 650 seats, 3 sports halls, a library with a collection of over 500,000 books, and 5 reading rooms with 500 seats. The university has cultural and domestic facilities, etc.

Over the period of its existence, Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University has grown from a small teacher training institute to one of the largest higher education institutions of Ukraine of the IV accreditation level. Almost 70,000 teachers have been trained since then. Many university graduates defended their PhD and doctoral theses, became honoured workers and distinguished educators of Ukraine. Among the graduates of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubysnkyi State Pedagogical University there are high-ranking government officials, heads of local self-government at various levels, politicians, writers, educators, famous artists and sportsmen.
